There are few things that make us feel any better than when the opportunity presents itself to do something extra special for someone else when it is completely unexpected to all involved. It is equally as good of a feeling being the recipient of such acts. A few years ago we had the opportunity to put this into practice, as while on a trip to our Nation’s Capital a very expensive 35mm camera was found completely unattended in a subway station. A careful examination revealed a very worn but still legible return address label attached. The next day the camera was carefully packed, and shipped to the Long Island NY address. A note was enclosed stating that we wanted for them to have not only their camera, but the visual memories it contained as well, and nothing else. I sincerely hope that in some way they have been able to return the favor by doing one for someone else.
Perhaps one thing we tend to overlook is that continual acts of kindness have a far greater impact on our personal lives, as well as society in general, than do the random ones. Candle lighting ceremonies come to mind here, as they symbolize this thought. If we want the world to be a brighter place, we have to start with ourselves, then pass to the person right next to us, by sharing our light, or act of kindness if you will, with them. Banding together as a group of people to spread the light of kindness, compassion and service produces greater than imaginable results.
Now that MMVII is well underway it is our hope that you will not only have the opportunity to give a random act of kindness to someone this year, but also that you will take the opportunity to upgrade the random to the continual, joining with others to turn the solitary light of one candle not only into the bright light of the personal satisfaction gained from being of service to others, but also making our communities a shining light in an otherwise dark world.
